Three trip shapes that work in practice

How the nights are split matters more than the choice of any single hotel. These are three shapes our partner agency prepares often; each one can be adjusted.

  • Tahiti and Moorea

    7 nights

For a first trip with a single crossing.

    1. 2 nightsArrival, Papeete and the west coast
    2. 5 nightsMoorea, the bays and the lagoon

One change, by ferry from the Papeete ferry terminal.

  • Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora

    10 nights

For combining the sister island with the lagoon of Bora Bora.

    1. 1 nightArrival on Tahiti
    2. 4 nightsMoorea
    3. 5 nightsBora Bora, on a motu or on the main island

Two changes: the ferry to Moorea, a domestic flight to Bora Bora.

  • Society Islands and Tuamotu

    14 nights

For longer trips and for divers.

    1. 2 nightsTahiti
    2. 4 nightsMoorea or Huahine
    3. 4 nightsBora Bora or Taha’a
    4. 4 nightsRangiroa or Fakarava

Three changes, by domestic flight, except the ferry to Moorea.

A practical guide to French Polynesia

Humpback whales in French Polynesia

Humpback whales reach French Polynesia from July to the end of October, according to the Direction de l’environnement; Tahiti Tourisme extends the season to November. They follow the coasts of the Society, Austral, Tuamotu and Gambier islands. Rurutu, in the Australs, is nicknamed “the whale island”, and trips also leave from Moorea, Tahiti and Tubuai. The whole country is a sanctuary: nobody may come within 15 metres of an animal, no boat within 100 metres, and only three authorised boats may enter the 300-metre observation zone, at under 3 knots and for no more than 15 minutes. Permits run from 20 July to 20 November.

Polynesian culture: marae, Heiva, tattoo, language

The marae are the former political, cultural and ceremonial centres of the Polynesians, open-air temples built of stone. The most important, Taputapuātea at Opoa on Raiatea, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2017. It is visited by keeping to the paths, not climbing on the stones, in silence and without picnics. Living culture is met at the Heiva i Tahiti, the dance and song competition that fills Papeete every July, in ’ori Tahiti shows, at the tattoo artists found on almost every island and in the museums of Punaauia and Atuona. French is the official language; Tahitian is widely spoken, and ’Ia ora na opens every conversation.

Entry formalities for French Polynesia

French Polynesia has its own entry rules, different from those of mainland France and the Schengen area; the border police check arrivals at Tahiti-Faa’a airport. Citizens of the European Union enter with a valid passport and no visa. Other travellers show a passport valid for three months beyond their planned departure, with two blank pages and issued less than ten years ago; they need no visa for 90 days in any 180-day period if their country is on the exemption list (the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Japan among others), otherwise they need a short-stay visa valid for French Polynesia. The competent authority is the Haut-commissariat de la République in Papeete.

What a local agency does differently

Our partner agency is based in Tahiti. Connections between the islands, travel times and the actual location of a place to stay are part of its daily work, not entries in a catalogue.
